Thrift stores are typically established to raise money for a charity by selling used clothing, books, music, furniture, and other items. These second-hand items are sold for a significantly cheaper price. The profit made is donated to the shop’s charity of choice to help people in need.
Some individuals believe that thrift stores are unsanitary, or look down on them because the prospect of using someone else’s leftovers is unattractive. However, others appreciate the opportunity to buy inexpensive and unique items. These stores help people in a variety of ways—by offering a low price for people who can’t afford much else, raising money for charity, and accepting donations.
Sanderson sophomore Lane Swecker stated, “I like thrift stores because you can buy cheap, unique stuff that isn’t identical to everything else in mainstream stores like Target.” In fact, Swecker found her homecoming dress at a thrift store this year!
There are several thrift stores around Raleigh. Goodwill, an international nonprofit, also has various locations across the US. North Raleigh Ministries, Cause for Paws, and the Salvation Army have Raleigh sites as well. At all of these places, people can donate items as well as shop for them.
Thrift stores are a beacon for community outreach and great fundraising enterprises. This holiday season, students should consider buying unconventional, cheap, and unique holiday gifts from these local thrift stores.
