Spring sports at Sanderson have begun.

Spring sports at Sanderson High are coming back in full force. After their seasons were cut short last year due to Covid, Spartans are excited to be participating once again.

This year has been a challenging and chaotic year for all Sanderson students, but for athletes especially. While our football season usually takes place in the fall, this year it began in winter and commenced not too long ago. Both women’s and men’s lacrosse teams played in the fall, while men’s typically play in the spring.

Even with all of these changes, sports here at Sanderson have continued forward. Here are some of the sporting events to look forward to in the coming months.

Varsity women’s softball played their first game March 16, where they beat Enloe Magnet High School 7-2. Their next game is scheduled for April 20 at Middle Creek High School. Player Emily Porter urges Spartans to come out and watch saying, “Supporting the softball team will help build a much stronger Sanderson community.”

Sanderson wrestling began Monday, April 12. Wrestler Griffin Scott talks about the upcoming season saying, “The team is very excited for what is about to come. I cannot wait for the regional tournament in June.” Their first home contest is April 28 against Enloe and Clayton. Assistant Coach Russ Tarlton continues to post this season’s updates on their Twitter @sandersoncap7.

Both junior varsity and varsity baseball have begun as well. The first home varsity match will be against Enloe on April 29.

Sanderson track began Monday, April 12. Coach Marc Medford explained that there will be certain Covid protocols put in place in both the practices and the meets. Track meets will only host four teams and are limited to 50 girls and 50 boys for each team.

The remainder of the month includes Sanderson golf matches, men’s tennis matches, JV baseball games, and women’s varsity soccer plays towards the end of April. The official Sanderson athletic webpage posts updates on ticket information and a calendar of any upcoming sporting events as well.
