With many star-studded nominees, the Nobel Peace Prize race for 2021 is definitely something to look forward to.
Throughout the exhausting year that was 2020, organizations such as the World Health Organization and Black Lives Matter made monumental differences in the day-to-day lives of an innumerable amount of people. Along with these organizations, activist Greta Thunberg and politicians such as former United States President Donald Trump and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny are seeking the noteworthy accolade.
Sanderson sophomore Olivia Richardson believes the WHO should take home the prize, “I think the WHO did a good job considering how much pressure they were under and how fast they had to take action.”
According to the Reuters survey of Norwegian lawmakers, the WHO was nominated because of its COVAX program, which is focused on providing COVID-19 vaccines to developing countries. As a result of this program, many members of the public, like Richardson, believe the WHO deserves this paramount award.
In company with these momentous organizations is the young environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who could be the second youngest award winner, behind Malala Yousafazi. Despite Thunberg’s young age of 18, some students would not cast a vote for her if given the chance.
“I think the prize should go to the WHO” Sanderson High School junior Thomas Powell proclaimed “Mostly because of the guidelines they set so essential businesses could open safely.”
Although a lot of good has been done by the contestants for the exceptional accolade, the Nobel Peace Prize itself has shined a spotlight on many key issues recently. “I love that the Nobel Peace Prize is highlighting food scarcity,” Sanderson English teacher James Rutherford remarked, “a problem that is only likely to intensify in the coming years.”
When it comes down to who will take the noteworthy prize, there are many remarkable nominees. No matter who takes it home, only good can come from this race.
