Miley Cyrus Faces $300 mil. Copyright Lawsuit
Popular singer and actress Miley Cyrus may be facing charges of a $300 million in copyright infringement from Jamaican songwriter Michael May. The renowned song “We Can’t Stop” contains similar content found in May’s 1988 song, “We Run Things”.
The lawsuit, originally presented in 2018, became finalized recently by May. Cyrus’ lawyers revealed a settlement agreement made December 12.
They named the filed agreement “pending payment of the settlement proceeds.” However, the terms of their settlement are still not yet revealed.
“We Can’t Stop,” released in June of 2013, served as the primary single from Cyrus’ fourth studio effort Bangerz, and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2013.
May, who uses the stage name “The Moniker Flourgon,” made claims that 50 percent of Cyrus’ hit comes from “We Run Things” that used to be a No.1 single in Jamaica. Accusations from May were made towards Cyrus and Sony-owned RCA Records of misusing content, that includes the main hook “We run things. Things no run we”. Cyrus sings the hook as “We run things. Things don’t run we.” in her song.
May, Sony, Cyrus, and the song’s production team filed a joint agreement in Manhattan federal court and ended the lawsuit with prejudice, which means the case can not be filed again. Cyrus continues to dismiss making new remarks or comments on the subject at hand.
