Leaving a legacy through cartoons

Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease at age 57 on November 26. Hillenburg will be remembered for the impact he made both on television and comedy. Whether viewers belong to the targeted young audience or grew up watching the show, every SpongeBob SquarePants fan can agree that the show is always a mood booster.

Without Hillenburg, thousands of people today would not be the same, as the show fostered humor and knowledge in children around the world. SpongeBob’s character taught viewers how to tie their shoes with the help of his catchy tune “Loop De Loop,” and he showed us the meaning of “fun” through a comical duet with Plankton, the cynical owner of the Krusty Krabs rival restaurant, The Chum Bucket.  Senior Evelyn Lassiter stated, “SpongeBob taught me the meaning of friendship and brought me a lot of laughs.”

Hillenburg also used SpongeBob SquarePants as a platform to teach children important lessons. As a former marine biologist, Hillenburg used his knowledge of marine life to create his characters. From an extremely positive sea sponge to a friendly yet naive sea star, the character taught children around the world learned to make the best of every situation. He showed us the value of friendship, persistence, and most importantly, keeping the Krabby Patty formula safe from Plankton. Hillenburg had a creative mind a joyful heart that will be missed, but the legacy he has left will forever be present.
